I can’t stress enough the importance of placing your children in an exercise program as early as possible. My two were exposed very early. I not only followed a Prenatal Exercise Regimen, I also followed a Post Natal Exercise Regimen, and the Newborns had the Opportunity to watch “Mommy” while she exercised.
I don’t know if they were aware of the conditioning process, but I use to play classical music from the time of conception. The enjoy listening to this type of music today. This past year my son who is now 23 years old took his girlfriend to see “The Nutcracker Ballet”, and my daughter who is now 25 years old, and performed in the "Nutcracker" from the time she was 4 years old until she was 17 years, had to see the ballet this past year as well. In our family Christmas is not Christmas until we see a performance of “The Nutcracker”.
It was not always this way, my son use to say “not again” every year his sister performed. But, today he misses it. It’s amazing how conditioning works not only for the mind but, the body as well.
Now its my little nephew’s turn for conditioning. He has been to a few of my race events, and has seen all my medals. He has wanted his own medal for about a year. So, on February 1, 2009, he ran in the “Surf City Kids Run”. This was his first run, and it was a little overwhelming for him at first. When he has been to my events he has always been at the finish line very excited and yelling “Auntica”.
There was a bit of drama before, and during the run. He was a little concerned about having to run with all the “big people”, since this is what he remembered from my past events. But, we assured him he would be running with kids his size.
Secondly, the crowd at the Surf City Event was huge, and the commotion was too much for him at the start line. But, in the end when the crowd was cheering for him, the “Little Ham” in him prevailed, and the run to the finish line was great!
He received his first medal, it is a Surf Board. I could not wait to see him and his medal. I was participating in the Half-Marathon event, and all I could think of, was rushing to the Finish Line to see my nephew with his medal.
The size of the medal is perfect for him. I hope that this is the first of many for him. And I hope that I continue to lead by example. It is important to remember that our children are the future, help them lead a healthy life, and they will follow your example and continue the trend. Inspire and train them well in prevention through wellness and exercise.

Children Learn By Example
Being a good example for your children is the best way to enforce good habits. Your family’s diet is a major priority. Remember the saying,” You are What You Eat”. I truly agree with that statement, with one minor adjustment, it should say, “You are What You Eat and Drink”. And of course what the drink of my choice is water. Water, the vital substance which ensures the continued existence of all forms of life wins by far. So, my advice is for you to take the juices and soda out of your diet. Lead by example and encourage your children to drink more water. Water not only cleanses the body, it will give you more energy as well as promotes healthier skin and teeth. Water is the essence of wellness, and prevention.
I will always remember the enlightening comment from my 4-yr old nephew this past New Year’s Eve. I was “big boy sitting him” (I can’t say babysitting); he’s a big boy so he says. He wanted to stay awake until his family came home, so it’s late he’s yawning, and he tells me, “I have to drink my water so I don’t go to sleep”. I was amazed, he gets it! He knew water would give him the energy he needed to stay awake and wait for his parents.
This “big boy” drinks a large amount of water. He has clear skin, and no cavities, while some of friends his age who rather drink juice, already have cavities. His parents drink water and they seldom drink anything else. And as for the “Big Boy”, he learns by imitation. This good habit comes natural, and water is all that he ever asks for when he’s thirsty. Why not? He does not want to go to sleep and miss anything.

Is Sneaking Fiber in Your Children's Diet OK?
When my children were young, I could get away with sneaking in some bran in the cream puff dough. After all they loved the homemade cream puffs I whipped up especially during the holidays. They even volunteered my services for any school celebration.
Now that they are older, that trick went the way of Santa Claus, The Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy. I had to confess. They now know that being regular is not hereditary, it was the secret work of mom. It became very obvious when they went out on their own and they started having regularity problems. The answer, mom was not around sneaking in a little bran here and there.
Because I was sneaking it in, and not being honest about the importance of fiber in their diet, they grew up thinking that it was magically in their system. They did not understand why their friends were having problems and they were not.
My advice is for you to educate your children early on the importance of fiber in their diet. This way they start a good habit early in life and keep it for life. Don't make the same mistake I made. My children are now learning how important this is, and although I'm not a believer of the phrase " You can't teach an old dog new tricks", the difficulty they are having including this basic ingredient in their diet is challenging this disbelief.
You can still keep Santa, The Easter Bunny and The Tooth Fairy a mystery, but please do not add "The Fiber" in your diet to that list.
